Because You Love to Hate Me reimagines some classic villains and twists their tales so the reader can view their point of view. Along with some classic villains, readers are introduced to some original villain characters and their storylines. Told in short stories by 13 different authors and book influencers. Readers will be swept into worlds of evil!
Because You Love to Hate Me was a read that I was excited to get into because one of the featured authors Victoria. Schwab has been one of my long-time favorite authors. The first short story was not by Victoria Schwab but set the tone for the book very clearly! Despite knowing the premise of the book, the first short story still managed to shock me. Of the 13 short stories, my favorites had to include The Blood of Imuriv by Renee Ahdieh, The Sea Witch by Marissa Meyer, Beautiful Venom by Cindy Pon, and Death Knell by Victoria Schwab.
Because You Love to Hate Me is a book that will appeal to all readers because it contains 13 stories that are short and digestible while still managing to be filled with a lot of wonderful detail! The great thing about short stories, especially this book in particular, is that one book has the ability to introduce readers to many different authors and their writing styles. While one short story may not appeal to a reader, that doesn't mean the next one won't! For instance, with this novel, I have been a fan of Victoria Schwab for many years, but I was also introduced to Cindy Pon who wrote an amazing short story about Medusa! It is because of this short story that I plan on reading more books by Cindy Pon.
In a review by Emma Carbone in the School Libary Journal, Emma agrees that Medusa's retelling had a good twist by stating, "Cindy Pon's poignant 'Beautiful Venom' (prompt: 'Medusa, go!'), which makes the Greek myth relevant to modern readers as they watch Mei Feng become Mei Du in Pon's tragic retelling with a Chinese setting." Readers who enjoyed reading about the classic villain story with a twist will enjoy reading the Disney Villians series by Serena Valentino.
